The ponderous 'Still Life: Peaches and One Pomegranate' is a marked departure from many of Hartley's earlier, expressionist works. During the 1920s, he traveled to Aix-en-Provence, France, where he immersed himself in the works of Cezanne and produced multiple drawings of still lifes and landscapes that privileged simplicity of form and investigated spatial relations.
