Captain of the Carpathia. Captain Arthur Henry Rostron, R.N.R., aged 43, was commander of the Carpathia - the ship that rescued 705 of Titanic's passengers after receiving her SOS. He was the son of James Rostron, from Bolton, Lancashire, educated at Bolton High School and the Bolton Church Institute, and later went on board the Conway naval training ship in the Mersey. He was taken in to the service of the Cunard company and for a long time was chiefly employed in the Mediterranean. He was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve and had decorations for long service and the King's medal for his safe conveyance of troops to South Africa during the south African War. Titanic was built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast Ireland during 1910 - 1911 and later sank on April 15th, 1912 off the coast of New Foundland after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York, USA, with the loss of 1,522 passengers and crew.
