South Africa, Zulu Warrior Dance Costume,1840s

Nopae, young Zulu in his dance costume. In a typical Zulu dance large and high steps and jumps are made, and is hard and rhythmically pounded on the ground. The dancers stand in a line. Hands are piled high, often decorated with weapons and shields.  In 1846 George French Angas (English explorer and painter) went to South Africa, where he spent two years in Natal and the Cape, working on a series of drawings and watercolors which were published in 1849 as The Kafirs Illustrated.
