Titel:
Florence and Samuel Baker,19th Century
Florence Barbara Maria von Sass (August 6, 1841 - March 11, 1916) was orphaned during the Hungarian Revolution. She was sent to an Ottoman harem, where she lived as a chore girl until she hit puberty, when she was sold to a slave auction. Samuel Baker (June 8, 1821 - December 30, 1893) an English explorer, naturalist, big game hunter, writer and abolitionist became entranced by Florence. When he couldn’t outbid the pasha, he bribed the guards and she was allowed to escape with him. In 1869, Baker led a military expedition to the equatorial regions of the Nile, with the object of suppressing the slave-trade there and opening the way to commerce. Lady Baker accompanied him. Africa illustrated by William. R. Smith, 1889 (cropped and cleaned).
