West Berlins standing at a heavy Patton tank of the US Army on 23rd August 1961 at checkpoint Friedrichstraße in the western part of Berlin. From the 13th of August in 1961, the day of the construction of the Wall, until the fall of the Wall on the 9th of November in 1989, the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR were seperated into West and East by the Iron Curtain.
