The god is seated at the mouth of a cave, dressed in his traditional garb made from leaves, holding in the right hand a branch with leaves and berries, the virtues of which he has been demonstrating. Watercolor from 1920. Shennong is considered to have been one of the Three Sovereigns (also known as "Three Emperors") who lived some 5,000 years ago.
