Robert Oppenheimer. Portrait of Julius Robert Opp- enheimer (1904-67), American physicist and leader of the Manhattan Project which developed the first atomic bomb in 1945. He studied in Europe under famous physicists such as Rutherford, Heisenberg & Dirac. From 1929 he established schools of theo- retical physics in the USA. He studied electron- positron pairs, cosmic-ray theory & deuteron reac- tions. In 1943 became director of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, in New Mexico. From 1943 to 1953 he served as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1953 his political background and opposition to the development of the hydrogen bomb caused the government to force him to resign.
