'Lord Strathcona', c1900, (1914). Portrait of Scottish-Canadian businessman Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal (1820-1914), one of the British Empire's foremost builders and philanthropists. Strathcona was commissioner, governor and principal shareholder of the Hudson's Bay Company, president of the Bank of Montreal, and co-founded the Canadian Pacific Railway. He represented Montreal in the House of Commons of Canada, was Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and served as chairman of Burmah Oil and the Anglo-Persian Oil Company.
