MARIA SOFIA OF LA ROCHE

Marie Sophie von LA ROCHE (6 December 1730 - 18 February 1807), born Marie Sophie Gutermann von Gutershofen, is considered the first financially independent professional writer in Germany. Spouses La Roche kept a popular literary salon in their home in Ehrenbreitstein, frequented by writers and intellectuals; the fortune of her first epistolary novel introduced Marie Sophie to the publishing world, in which she was also director and editor of "Pomona", the first German women's magazine, as well as author of numerous travel journals, through which she managed to keep herself and his large family even after the loss of his widow's pension due to the French revolutionary occupation.
