The Chavin civilization appeared around 1500 BC in a place called Chavin de Huantar, in the Andes cordillera of Peru. Chavin de Huantar truly began to flourish in 900 BC. At its peak, the city was home to about 4,000 inhabitants. It went into a slow decline around 200 BC. The art, religion, technical genius and commercial network of the Chavin greatly influenced the people of the Andes and the coast of Peru.
