Reliquary Statue of St. Foy, France

Reliquary statue of Sainte Foy (Saint Faith), detail of head, c. 980, Sainte-Foy Abbey Church, Conques, France. The remains of St. Foy, a martyred young woman from the fourth century, was the main draw for medieval pilgrims to the Church. The gilded reliquary has been theorized to be either an imperial portrait of the Later Roman Empire or a portrait or death-mask of Charlemagne.
