Casimir Funk. American biochemist born in Warsaw, Poland, and credited with discovering vitamins. Funk stirred public interest with his 1912 paper on vitamin-deficiency diseases where he coined the term ''vitamine'' and later posited the existence of four such materials (B1, B2, C and D). These materials could help to prevent diseases like scurvy, beriberi and pellagra. Funk also contributed to the study of the hormones of the pituitary and sex glands.
