The attack was made by the Rebels under General Breckinridge with fifteen regiments and ten pieces of Artillery, the Union forces consisted of 2500 men and a few pieces of artillery under General Williams, the fight lasted six hours when the Rebels were repulsed and forced to retreat, the great rebel iron clad ram gunboat 'Arkansas' also approached to cooperate with the rebels but was promptly attacked by the 'Essex', under Commodore Porter, and after a short engagement set on fire and destroyed."
