The two princes, the Brahmins and ministers approach the hermitage of BharadvÄja on foot, with the three queens at a distance over the horizon followed by their litters. The army with its elephants and chariots waits behind. On the left of the picture, behind a screen of trees, the hermit BharadvÄja sits outside his hut, here depicted as a pavilion, with his visitors seated around. Other ascetics sit in meditation, while pairs of deer look on. BharadvÄja offers complete hospitality to all his visitors, including the whole of Bharata’s army. Ramayana. Udaipur, c.1653.
