Gustave Charpentier (June 25, 1860 - February 18, 1956) was a French composer. He took lessons in composition under Jules Massenet and had a reputation of wanting to shock his professors. The premiere of Louise (opera) in 1900 was an immediate success. Soon this work was being performed all over Europe and America, and it brought him much acclaim. Painting by Henri Martin, 1932 (cropped and cleaned).
