Ashanti sculpture. The Ashanti are a major ethnic group of the Ashanti Region in Ghana. Prior to European colonization, they developed a large and influential empire in West Africa. This sculpture probably depicts the legend of the Golden Stool, which tells the story of the birth of the Ashanti kingdom. According to the story, the stool was commanded from the heavens and given to the first Ashanti king.
