Kinkaku - the Golden Pavilion - is the name given to Rokuon-ji Temple on Kyoko-chi pond in Kyoto. Built as a villa for the retirement of the 3rd Shogun of Ashikaga in 1394, it was made into a Zen-temple according to the Shogun's will. The second and third floors are covered with gold leaf on Japanese lacquer; on the roof is a golden phenix.
