East Midlands Gas Board shop window cooker display, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1961. Artist: Michael Walters

East Midlands Gas Board shop window display, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1961. For their July 1961 window display in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, the East Midlands Gas Board promote the use of gas with their No Guessing with Gas slogan, with its visible heat and instant control. The stand next to the Flavel cooker on the right encourages the housewife to Flatter him, Pamper him and Spoil him. Such displays of sexism would not be received well today and the Generous Trade in Allowance sign would probably refer to the man of the house rather than an old cooker.
