first electric battery

A drawing made by inventor Alessandro Volta (1745 - 1827), of the first electric battery, called the pile or the Voltaic battery. This was the first instrument able to produce a steady electric current. After reading about the torpedo fish that delivers an electric shock using organs made of alternating discs of material, Volta arranged discs of zinc, silver and leather soaked in salt water in a column. When he connected a wire to the top and bottom discs he obtained an electric current. He had invented the battery. This drawing was included in a letter Volta wrote describing his work to Sir Joseph Banks. Banks, President of the Royal Society in London, published the letter along with Volta's diagram in the Royal Society's journal, Philosophical Transactions, in 1800.
