'Lucy': Fossil hominid skeleton

Skeleton of 'Lucy'. Fossil skeleton of the early hominid known as Lucy (AL 288-1), a member of the species Australopithecus afarensis. Lucy was found in the Afar region of Ethiopia. Her bones are 3.3 million years old, and Lucy is widely accepted as the earliest link in the human record. The fossil remains comprise 40% of the entire skeleton and include skull fragments (at bottom), mandible with teeth, most of the left and right arm, vertebrae, rib fragments, sacrum, left pelvic bone (at top), left thigh and right lower leg bones (not seen). The pelvis showed her to be female, wisdom teeth suggested she was 20 years old, and the thighbone indicated she was small at about 4 feet tall.
