Pityriasis Rubra, Illustration, 1880s

Pityriasis Rubra is a chronic skin condition and was first described in the late 19th century. It presents itself on the skin as itchy, flaky (pityriasis), scaly lesions. The lesions can be thick and orange/red (rubra) in color. Lesions often appear on the palms of the hand and the plantar surface (sole) of the foot. The suffix pilaris is used when the condition affects the skin at the hair follicles. Chromolithograph, 1880s. Illustration by E. Burgess after R. W. Sherwin, Mabel Green and Jonathan Hutchinson.
