The Nazi Propaganda! on the back of the image reads: "Set on fire upon fleeing. Nearly all houses south of the strategically important village Smolensk, which was stubbornly defended by the Bolshevists, were set on fire before the withdrawal. Immediately after the German take-over of the village, the returing locals started with extinguishing works, in which our soldiers participated. It was devastating to see, how the farmers tried to save from the meagre huts as much as they could with the most primitive means." Image from the Eastern Front/Russia, 5 August 1941. The attack on the Soviet Union by the German Reich was agreed on in July 1940 and prepared as the "Operation Barbarossa" since December 1940. On 22 June 1941, the invasion by the German Wehrmacht started. Photo: Fotoarchiv für Zeitgeschichte/Archiv
