Hermes or Mercury with the caduceus and Roman tuba (or similar). Engraving by James Barry, 1791. Hermes is an ancient Greek god, son of Zeus and the Pleiad Maia. He is known as the messenger of the gods, and the one who conducts souls to the underworld. In some myths he is a trickster, and outwits other gods for his own satisfaction or for the sake of humankind. His main attributes and symbols include winged sandals (allowing him to fly), a winged cap, and his herald's staff (the Greek kerykeion or Latin caduceus), which consists of two snakes wrapped around a winged staff.
