The crane is one of two 30-ton wrecking cranes built at the Victorian Railways Newport Workshops in 1911, to designs of Cowans Sheldon, Carlisle. The cranes were given Victorian Railways Nos. 5 & 7. Each crane had a 80 psi vertical steam.
