EUGENE EMMANUEL VIOLLET-LE-DUC. Civil architecture / Middle Ages. View of the castle and the City of Carcassonne at the time of Saint Louis, circa 1250. (Louis IX started the construction of the second enclosure so that the place could support long sieges. Threats were important: Raimond Trencavel, a refugee in Aragon, was still trying to take back his lands and the City was part of the defense system of the border between France and Aragon. In 1240, Raimond Trencavel tried to besiege the City, but was soon forced to flee in front of the arrival of reinforcements troups from King Louis IX.
