Maria Pacheco de Padilla (c.1496-1531), Castilian noblewoman, wife of the Comunero Juan de Padilla (1490-1521). She was known by the nickname "The Lioness of Castile". In Toledo, Maria de Padilla received news of her husband's execution in Villalar (Valladolid, Spain) on April 24, 1521, the day after his defeat in the battle of the same name. Maria Pacheco, sitting at a table, appears dejected after receiving the news. She is accompanied by two female figures, one crying on her back and the other consoling her. The newly arrived militias are kept apart, on the left. After her husband's death, she took command of the uprising of the Comuneros of Castile. Maria Pacheco after Villalar. Engraving by Tom‡s Carlos Capuz (1834-1899) after a painting by Vicente Borr‡s (1837-1903). La Ilustracion Espa–ola y Americana, 1881.
