Buddha from a Stupa (400-600) Gupta period. Terracotta. Buddhists build stupas or mounds to enclose relics of the Buddha and later teachers, as well as other important artefacts such as sacred books. The stupas became more elaborate in time. Pilgrims cam from afar to worship the stupas, walking round and round them on a ritual path.
