Sea Giant Crashes Through - The 45,000-ton tanker World Glory, largest cargo ship ever built in the western Hemisphere, ploughs up the sea during trials off the coast of Maine, USA. Designed by the Bethlehem Steel Company and built at their Quincy (Massachusetts) yard for World Tankers Co. Inc., a Stavros F. Niarchos enterprise, the big vessel achieved speeds in excess of 17 knots.
Planned for efficiency and economy of operation as well as size, the World Glory is the first ship in her class to employee less than 17,500 horsepower. September 9, 1954. (Photo by Reuterphoto).
