Slaughterman with dead ox

The Slaughterman. The ox has been killed by blows of the pole-axe to the head. The slaughterman leans on the pole-axe after the exertion of killing the beast. A steel for sharpening his tools hangs from his waist. A cleaver leans against a stool on the left, and a butcher's tray leans against the hitching rail on centre right. From "Costume of Great Britain" by William Henry Pyne (London, 1808). Aquatint. (Photo by: Universal History Archive/UIG via Getty Images).
