'The Great Fire of London, 1666', (c1666). Artist: Unknown

'The Great Fire of London, 1666', (c1666). As is usual in paintings of the Great Fire the flaming St Paul's Cathedral dominates the scene. The view is taken from Essex Stairs looking down past Temple Stairs towards Bridewell Dock on the River Thames, with London Bridge on the extreme right and a full moon above. The 'Impressionist' feel of this small work suggests that it may have been done on the spot and was intended to be developed into a large-scale painting later.
