Two views of a female trachoma patient after treatment: on left is depiction of early stages of improvement characterized by ability to open eyes, on right she has her eyes wide open. Trachoma is a chronic contagious disease of the eye characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea and the formation of scar tissue, caused by infection with the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Pannus is an abnormal vascular thickening of the cornea. It occurs most often in conjunction with trachoma. Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea.
