Harriet Martineau, English Sociologist

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was an English social theorist, whom some regard as the first female sociologist. She wrote essays and books from a sociological and feminist perspective, studying issues such as marriage, children, religious life, and race relations. She earned enough through her writing to support herself, unusual for a woman in the Victorian era. Wood engraving, circa 1929.
