Prince Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange (1567-1625) was Sovereign of the Netherlands, from 1618, on the death of his eldest half brother, Prince William, Prince of Orange. Maurice was stadtholder of the United Provinces of the Netherlands from 1585 till his death in 1625. He organised the rebellion against Spain into a coherent, successful revolt. Re reorganised the Dutch States Army together with William Lodewijk, studied military history, strategy and tactics, mathematics and strategy and astronomy and proved to be among the best strategists of his age. His victories in the battles at Turnhout and Nieuwpoort earned him military fame.
