Archangel Saint Raphael. Sculpture of the archangel which was on board the second ship of the fleet, of the same name, under the command of Paulo da Gama, Vasco da Gama's older brother. It accompanied the arrival of the Portuguese in India, surviving the wreck of its ship on the return voyage. Transferred to Vasco da Gama's ship, it accompanied him on all subsequent voyages. It later returned with Vasco da Gama to India, where it remained after his death in 1524. In 1600 it finally returned to Portugal, brought by Don Francisco da Gama, the great-grandson of the navigator. Maritime Museum. Lisbon, Portugal.
