Rama's sandals are installed on the throne

Rama's sandals are installed on the throne, When the two brothers returned to Ayodhya, the city appeared like a desert to them and Bharata told the queens and Vasistha that he and Satrughna would retire to its suburb Nandigrama, resolved to live as ascetics until Rama's return. In the throne-room at Nandigrama, Bharata places Rama's sandals on the throne and with the assembled priests and ministers installs them as the ruler of Ayodhya. They are henceforth treated like Rama himself. The two princes in their bark clothes hold the royal parasol and wave a chowrie over them, while the necessary implements for coronation and the imperial elephants and horses are brought to them. An attendant even brings a dish of betel-chews. Image taken from Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda. Originally published/produced in Udaipur, 1650.
