Louis VIII, known as 'the Lion', King of France, (1790). Louis VIII (1187-1226) became king of France in 1223. He had previously been offered the crown of England during the revolt of the barons against King John in 1216, but renounced the claim when he signed the Treaty of Lambeth the following year.
