Tarquinius and the Sibyl. Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, aka Tarquin the Proud, d.495 BC, seventh and final king of Rome. Tarquin was approached by the Cumaean Sibyl, who offered him nine books of prophecy at an exorbitant price, he refused, and the Sibyl then burned three of the nine. She then offered him the remaining books, but at the same price, whereupon he refused again. Finally she burned three more books before offering him the three remaining books at the original price, he accepted and obtained the Sibylline Books. From Cassell's Illustrated Universal History, published 1883.
