American Progress

Illustrator John Gast worked with publisher George Crofutt to create "American Progress, 1872" to be distributed as a print with the magazine "Crofutt's Western World". The print (c. 1873) shows an allegorical female figure of America leading pioneers westward, as they travel on foot, in a stagecoach, conestoga wagon, and by railroads, where they encounter Native Americans and herds of bison.
