Mary Read, English Female Pirate

Mary Read AKA Mark Read (1685 - 1721) was an English pirate. She began dressing as a boy by her mother in order to receive inheritance money and then to join the British military. In 1720 she met Jack Rackham and joined his crew, dressing as a man alongside Anne Bonny. Rackham and his crew were arrested. Bonny and Read were pregnant and received delayed sentences but Read died of a fever. Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates, 1921  (cropped and cleaned).
