Ragusa, modern Dubrovnik, is a port city on the Dalmatian coast controlled by Venice until 1797. Bonington must have visited during his 1826 trip to Venice when the city was part of the Austrian empire and here records women in traditional slavic dress, noting that their distinctive shoes are called "L'Opanke" (Opanak).
