HENRI-JOSEPH HARPIGNIES. A View of Moulins

A View of Moulins. Artist: Henri-Joseph Harpignies (French, Valenciennes 1819-1916 Saint-Privé). Dimensions: 12 1/2 x 20 1/16 in. (31.7 x 51 cm). Date: ca. 1850-60.
This characteristically placid watercolor by Henri- Joseph Harpignies captures the skyline of Moulins at sunset. The capital of the department of Allier, Moulins is roughly one hundred miles northwest of Lyon in France. The highly finished nature of this landscape, together with its signature at the lower right, suggests that Harpignies may have marketed it as an independent work of art.
