Joseph Louis Lagrange, French mathematician, 1833. Lagrange (1736-1813) is best known for his work on theoretical mechanics. In 1787 he published what is regarded as his masterpiece, 'Mecanique Analytique', a work consisting purely of algebraic operations without any explanatory diagrams or information.
