St Denis, Patron Saint of France, 1826. St Denis, also known as Denys or Dionysius (dc258) was the first bishop of Paris. Persecuted under the Roman Emperor Valerian (c193-260), he was beheaded at Montmartre and was said to have carried his head to his burial site at Saint-Denis.
