Sidewinder snake

Sidewinder. Sidewinder snake (Crotalus cerastes) making tracks in the sand. The sidewinder is a small species of rattlesnake which gets its name from its method of locomotion. It lifts up a loop of its body and moves it forwards, the rest of its body following in a rolling motion. This results in parallel diagonal imprints of the snake's body in the sand. The sidewinder is nocturnal by nature. It ambushes its prey from beneath bushes where it lies partially buried and camouflaged. It preys on rodents, lizards and small birds. The sidewinder inhabits the deserts of south- western USA and Mexico. While it is a venomous snake, it rarely bite humans.
