stingray fossil

Stingray fossils are one of the most sought after fossil fish. The earliest known rays (probably guitarfish) date from the Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago. Fossil rays are rare because stingrays have no bones, only cartilage. However, their teeth fossilize well because they are composed of very hard enamel.
