Lupus Erythematosus, Illustration, 1880s

This image shows a young male with Lupus Erythematosus. This auto-immune disease is classified into two types: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) which involves multiple parts of the body and Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE) where only the skin is affected. The young man in the image shows classic symptoms of the disease such as the butterfly rash (so called as its appearance is like that of a butterfly with outstretched wings) across his cheeks and circular (discoid) lesions on his hands. Chromolithograph, 1878-1888. Illustration by E. Burgess after R. W. Sherwin, Mabel Green and Jonathan Hutchinson.
