Sir Francis Walsingham, spymaster of Queen Elizabeth I, (1824). Walsingham (c1530-1590) was one of the queen's principal secretaries of state, and is sometimes referred to as the father of modern intelligence. His discovery of a plot to assassinate Elizabeth led to the execution of Mary Queen of Scots.
