Sir Henry Tizard, K.C.B. F.R.S., F.R.A.S. F. Inst. P., was Chairman of the British Association meeting which was held at Brighton from September 8-15. It was Sir Henry Tizard's powerful brain and fine scientific mind that enabled the R.A.F. to win the Battle of Britain. Born in 1885, he became Assistant Controller of Experiment and Research to the R.A.F. towards the end of the First World War. At the beginning of the last war he was the first and only civilian member of the Air Council. In January 1947, Sir Henry, who was then Chairman of the Defence Research Policy Committee, was also appointed Chairman of an Advisory Council on Scientific Policy to advise the Lord President of the Council on the Government Scientific policy.
