Battle of Lincoln, Capture of King Stephen,1141

The Anarchy was a civil war in England and Normandy (1135-1153) which resulted in a widespread breakdown in law and order. The Battle of Lincoln occurred on February 2, 1141. The forces of King Stephen of England had been besieging Lincoln Castle but were themselves attacked by a relief force loyal to Empress Matilda and commanded by Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester, Matilda's half-brother. Stephen's forces were outnumbered, outfought, and many were killed. After fierce fighting in the city's streets, Stephen's forces were defeated, he was captured and imprisoned, effectively deposed while Matilda ruled for a short time. Cassell's Illustrated History of England, 1865 (cropped and cleaned).
