It signified the end of the process for Italian unification (Risorgimento), as well as the defeat of the Papal States under Pius IX. "The Breach of Porta Pia", by Carlo Ademollo (1825-1911), ca. 1880. On 20 September 1870 the city of Rome was liberated by the Italian army led by General Raffaele Cadorna (1815-1897). The painting depicts the battle, with the soldiers immersed in the smoke caused by the cannons that breached the ancient Aurelian Walls of Porta Pia. Oil on canvas. Museum of the Risorgimento. Milan.
